Glass Pipette & Automation
flyion enables its customers, through its patented Flip-the-Tip™ technology and in-house production of consumables, to carry out patch clamp experiments with high throughputs at low cost.
The Flip-the-Tip technology is the only commercially available method using glass pipettes in automation. With this method, the gigaseal patch clamp experiment is performed inside the glass pipette. This approach has a number of intrinsic benefits over planar patch clamp methods:
Auto-focusing of solution stream onto cell surface
- Extremely rapid EC solution exchange rates (<10 ms)
- No seal loss
- Rapidly desensitizing ligand gated channels measurable
Smallest chamber volume (~1 µl)
- Only 10 cells per measurement
- More reliable pharmacology data
- Minimal drug consumption
- Rare primary or stem cells measurable
High and stable success rates with physiological solutions and without Fluoride addition
- No disruption of cellular signaling
- No disruption of Ca channels measurements
Borosilicate Glass Pipettes
- Minimal unspecific drug binding
- Variable pipette geometry, e.g. sub-µ tip diameters enabling organelle measurements (e.g. Mitochondria)
Lowest consumable cost
The Flip-the-Tip approach supports both whole cell configuration and perforated patch experiments and allows temperature controlled experiments and extra- as well as intracellular solution exchange.
